Social media spammer gets caught with pants down

by James Duthie on March 7, 2008

monkey.jpgIt may almost be the end of Friday (at least here in Australia), but that doesn’t mean it’s too late for the latest installment of the Friday F#ckwit. And while the segment proved to be extremely unpopular (40% of my small subscriber base left after the first installment), I’ve decided to bring it back. After all… it’s my blog and I’ll rant if I want to…

Before nominating our lucky recipient, I must give kudos to Slight Shady SEO, who’s fine work exposed our nominee. This week Shady exposed the utter dodginess of SEO.com, an SEO domain trying to drum up traffic and buzz via Sphinn, one of my favourite social networks. I won’t go into the details of the dodgy tactics employed by SEO.com. Shady deserves your traffic if you’re interested in reading about their social media spamming habits (it’s a great read). But I will give them a f#ckwit nomination for launching a spam assault that could have been detected by a retarded monkey… (this is no reference to Shady’s abilities of course)… :)

Sure, almost every digital marketer involved in social media has made a self submission or two. Some may even manage dummy accounts (not me of course). But c’mon people… show the slightest bit of effort to cover your tracks if you have no intention aside from self promotion. The culprits leave the scent of spam over every single action on the site, including self submissions, mass voting by ‘new’ members (who fail to vote on any other articles) & even tying one of the suspect accounts to SEO.com… Either they’re not so sharp or just plain lazy. You be the judge.

Hopefully the SEO.com case will serve as a lesson to other would be spammers that social media success can’t be faked. It takes hard work and dedication to the relevant community. The essence of social media is the word ‘social’. Hang out often, form relationships & build respect. If you’re can’t commit to those philosophies, just go buy some Adwords credit and save your reputation.

Otherwise you’ll end up like SEO.com – our f#ckwit of the week.
