I have followed your strategy exactly and have successfully got my posts published on big blogs including Problogger and Daily Blog Tips.
Two things that I would insist are great content and touchy email, as you have mentioned.
I am however pressed for time recently and have not written any guest posts for the past two weeks. February was a great month for me regarding guest posts.

Thanks Katy. I'm putting together a couple of guest posts as we speak. Every blogger should make it part of their routine.

Excellent points you've made. I've recently started doing more guest posts and have discovered similar results. For me the biggest benefit is the slew of residual traffic that comes in and the time spent on my blog. Every time, without fail, it's the guest posts that bring over the best visitors.

Good luck with future guest posts!

@ Ken - nice work on the guest post on SEO Scoop and the SEO High School piece. I'm guessing you'll see some good results via Scoop. It's a great post.

@ Melanie - Thanks for reading. The argument is strong, but remember that picking the right blog is the most important part.

@ Dave - SEO really isn't my specialty either, although I know enough to get by. Interesting article by the way. I haven't ventured into video myself - maybe it's time to get a handheld... :)

@ Yura - Tracking the subscribers isn't my problem. It's knowing where they came from before clicking the magical subscribe button. There may well be a way, but I'm not an analytics guru...

You can track conversions by using Google Analytics to track clicks on your "Subscribe" buttons. Tracking browser/feedreader subscribers can be harder, but Feedburner gives a relative scale, comparable to other bloggers.

Other than that, yes, guest blogging rocks.
